A college student sustained severe burn injuries after a forty-year-old man allegedly set her on fire for refusing marriage proposal in Ghior upazila of Manikganj on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old victim is now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) with 40 percent burn injury on her body.

Riazuudin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Ghior Police Station, confirmed the matter.

Accused Sharif Mia has been harassing the victims for a few days. On Tuesday night, he met the victim near her house in Dimukh village when her family members fell asleep at night. At one point, he threw kerosene on her and set her on fire, he said.

Later, locals rescued the woman and rushed her to a local hospital. Later, she was shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery as her condition deteriorated.

The victim’s mother filed a case with the police station on Wednesday.
